This class is an intensive analysis of the fall of the Provisional Russian Government and the rise of the Soviet Union in the early 1900s. It presupposes that the learners will enter the class with some understanding of Russia and the Soviet Union (for example, who Lenin was, and what a Bolshevik is) but given the self-contained nature of this particular subject a learner should be able to follow along somewhat comfortably even if they have never learned who Lenin was. Students will walk away with a deeper understanding of how the Soviet's came to power in Russia.

Trained experience includes extensive studying during my earlier undergrad years, culminating in a capstone thesis paper. The topic has been extensively researched by myself in pursuit of this project, and much of what is presented is a condensed version of that research.

This class details in length the overthrow of a democratic government. While not scary, it can be potentially difficult to discuss how a democratic government is overthrown by its military / radical elements.

We will be leaning extensively on the book "The Soviet Experiment: Russia, the USSR, and the Successor States” by Grigor Suny. In addition, we will also be leaning on a digital archive of a newspaper titled "Izvestiia" which was active at the time these events were happening and contain many important quotations and details. Given the language barrier and political barrier between the English speaking United States and the Russian speaking Soviet Union (to say nothing of the time gap) this newspaper must be taken with a gain of salt, but in general has been trusted by scholars of the subject for some time now.
