In this fun and interactive playshop, we will compose at least four simple Christmas poems in one 55-minute session. In the beginning, we will write the poems together as a model for students to write even more poems later. Students who want to write their own poems during class will gladly be accommodated. This class is taught in English.
The students will learn to brainstorm a list of words and ideas to be used to compose at least 4 simple poems. They will learn to use descriptive words and imagery for creative writing. The students will explore basic poetry technique such as rhyme and rhythm patterns that they can use over again to write their own poetry.
I developed this poetry playshop to give students quick success with writing poetry, especially reluctant writers or struggling students. Many students think that writing poetry is hard and not fun. I wanted to change that. I have used this method of writing with students for the last 10 years, and it always gets rave reviews from parents and students.

The students will need: -handouts for the playshop (I will provide these for parents to print out prior to the session.) -crayons, colored pencils, or markers -pencil -stickers for decorating poetry pages (optional) -folder for keeping completed poetry (optional) -Rhyming Dictionary (optional)
I will be using a Rhyming Dictionary as my resource during the class. If you have one, it can be useful for this playshop. It is not required, but it can greatly help any poetry writing assignments. For your own future reference, there are also rhyming dictionaries or word search options online, as in "h"-words or adjectives that start with "b." Please offer them the guidance they might need to navigate online options safely.
