STEM: Science Technology Engineering Math (3rd-4Th Grade)

Looking for creative thinkers and engineers! In this ongoing class students will be encouraged to use their creativity and problem solving skills to complete a new STEM challenge each week using simple materials that can be found at home.

In this ongoing class students will learn about the engineering design process and how it is used to solve everyday problems. Each lesson will begin with a story to set up the challenge as well as a mini lesson to provide background knowledge on the topic. For example- if we are designing a boat that needs to hold weight without sinking, we will learn a bit about boats and how they float before our building time begins. Students will use the engineering design process to work through stem challenges. The challenges will improve their critical thinking and logical reasoning skills. They will learn to be more persistent and creative.

Students will need: A printout of the recording sheet or notebook paper to plan their design and record their findings. Tape/Glue Scissors A variety of building supplies such as cardboard, empty toilet paper/paper towel rolls, straws, craft sticks, foil, paper clips, plastic bags, rubber bands, paper/plastic/styrofoam cups, pom poms, cotton balls, pipe cleaners, string/yarn, etc. Materials from the recycle bin may also come in handy.
Students may need help and/or supervision when using scissors.
