Standards Based 6th Grade English Language Arts Course for Gifted & Neurodiverse

In this 8 week course, students will be immersed in language and literature. A fill quarter's worth of nationally based standards will be taught.
Class Experience
US Grade 3 - 6
This course is designed by a certified teacher of middle school English, specializing in the neurodiverse & gifted population. This is a nationally standards based ELA course that will expose students to a full 8 week long curriculum. I have taught English, Language Arts, Writing, Literature, Reading, Social Studies, & History throughout my 17 year career as a middle school teacher. I am a certified grades 4-9 teacher in the state of Ohio and I have my K-12 Gifted & Talented endorsement. Specifically, I have much experience working with gifted, neurodiverse, and/or twice exceptional students. Other than basic school subjects, I have also taught social emotional skills, speech & debate, chess, drama/acting, sewing, and so much more!
Homework Offered
Short homework assignments will be assigned M-W. Example assignments include: outlines, graphic organizers, online research, short stories, comprehension questions, etc. On Thursdays, students will receive a longer reading assignment to be completed by the following Monday. The amount of reading assigned will be based on the needs of each individual course and can vary anywhere from 3-10 pages of reading over this 3 day span.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Positive reinforcement is used in my classroom and students will each have a "sticker chart" in which they can create stickers to use when they complete work. This is completely optional. I do give feedback on all written work, but I do not assign grades.Grades Offered
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
All short stories are recommended for this age level and used widely in education. They deal with topics such as relationships, cultural identity, coming of age, death, acceptance of differences, poverty, generational conflict, and future dystopia. There is absolutely no topics that are violent or sexual in nature, or that touch on sensitive political questions. Approved third-party tools used in this course: Canva, Flipgrid, Google Classroom, Google Suite, Peardeck, Kahoot, & Padlet. Parental consent and accounts are needed for this tools and instructions will be given to parents prior to the course beginning about how to allow your child access to these tools if they do not already use them.
