With themes ranging from drunkenness to deception, from bullying to love, and from abuse of power to the pursuit of greatness—this play offers so much to explore. By the end of the class, students will be able to write and discuss the themes of the play as a whole; they will have improved their close reading, analytical, writing, and critical thinking skills; they will have one finished essay or creative writing piece; and they will have a new appreciation for a classic work by the Bard!
I've been teaching students to read, appreciate, and even find a love for Shakespeare for over 20 years! I have a bachelor's in literature from Barnard College and a Master's from Stanford. I was a high school teacher for 16 years.
Homework Offered
Students should expect to spend approximately 5 hours per week for this asynchronous class including writing, listening to the play and reading along, writing responses, and posting in the class discussion.4+ hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
I'll provide feedback to students' answers on questions and to their writing. If a grade is desired for the class, I'll give a rubric ahead of time as well as expectations for grading.Grades Offered
Students will need to access the handouts for class. They will also need a text of the play, either found online or a physical copy.
The themes of the play such as bullying, sexuality, and revenge are more appropriate for mature teens (just like in all of Shakepeare's work).
