Come make an aluminum foil boat with Sunny the Puppet and talk about buoyancy!

Class Experience

Sunny the Puppet and Dr. Hamilton will discuss what makes things sink or float.  Students will make predictions about what will sink or float and have the opportunity to do their own tests at home and share with the group.

Students will then design, test, and build their own aluminum foil boat to see how well it floats.  Sunny and the group will discuss why some boats floated better than others and what could be done to fix them.  Students will be encouraged to test again.

-At least 2 sections of 10"x10" aluminum foil
-A bowl of water or plastic tub of water (something large enough to determine if things float or sink.)
-Random objects that are safe (and approved by parent) to put in the water (ideas: small plastic toys, Lego bricks, spoons, pencil, clothespin, etc)  Have 5-10 different items.
-A lot of coins to see how many the boat can hold before it sinks (some boats can hold up to 50 coins or more!) 
-Copies of the handouts and a pencil for writing

This session will be using lots of water and materials.
Please ensure that the water is kept away from the electronics.
Parents should be nearby to keep an eye on safety.
