Presentation Skills Short Course
The Human Communication Studio
This course is geared toward serious high school students. Course Topics: frame and stance, movement and gesture, vocal production, the breath-thought connection and preparation strategies. Tools are applied to presenting and interviewing.
Class Experience
US Grade 10 - 12
Beginner Level
This is a short course of four 55-minute classes. Each class will introduce a topic and participants will practice the tool with content to improve presentation and communication skills. Participants will learn how the body, breath and voice contribute to a communication and presentation strategy. We will approach learning the tools of communication and presentation skill building similarly to how an athlete or musicians trains their body and mind in pattern based actions and thinking processes that, employed over time, produce the desired movement or interpretive outcomes.
Kathryn Kellner is the founder and director of The Human Communication Studio. HCS provides strategic communication consulting and training services. Employing a practice developed over 30 years, Kathryn and her team at HCS have developed a proven methodology drawn from the world of cognitive science, communication philosophy, and principles of acting from the classical school. Kathryn has taught a diverse clientele that come from the fields of law, engineering, science, politics, healthcare, technology, higher education, and business. She works with learners of all ages and abilities. All classes and consulting teaches that there is a methodology to strategic communication, establishes a working vocabulary of concepts, provides a set of immediately employable tools, and offers facilitated practice and coaching.
Homework Offered
We will workshop a concept or tool in class. The homework will be to apply that tool or concept to actual presentations or communication situations. The individual will choose what communicative activity they will practice with outside of class. Participants will need to identify and prepare topic material for the presentation in Week 4. We will discuss this in class.0 - 1 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
A rubric is provided that will guide the verbal feedback and assessment that is delivered in all class workshop experiences. The rubric will also guide the expectations and verbal feedback and assessment for the short presentation in week 4.Grades Offered
