Novel Study: A Wrinkle in Time

One of the best ways to improve reading comprehension is by fostering a love of reading! In this class, students will participate in a novel study of A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle. A novel study is an in-depth look at all aspects of the novel, not just the story contained inside. Each week, learners will engage with the teacher, the novel, and each other to gain a better understanding of what they're reading, which will in turn improve their reading comprehension skills. Learners will improve their reading comprehension by: - using context clues and making predictions - building vocabulary - identifying central themes and ideas - distinguishing between fact and opinion - making inferences - summarizing and sequencing a story
Homework Offered
Homework will be distributed in the class syllabus and novel study guide upon enrolling in the class. Assignments will include: - Independent reading outside of class (3 chapters per week) - Short written activities to be done on a weekly basis (approximately half an hour of work) - One final project upon finishing the novel (approximately an hour to two hours, depending on the project chosen)1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Learners will be assessed via written report following the conclusion of the class. Each learner's report will be individually written, and will pertain to the student's participation, strengths, areas for improvement, and overall reading comprehension.Grades Offered
Alongside written assessments, parents can request a letter grade or a certificate of completion for their learner. Parents must request a letter grade prior to the second week of class so that appropriate grading and notation can be recorded during live meetings.
Students will need a copy of A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle, as well as access to a printer for the class syllabus and novel study guide. Students may need access to art supplies depending upon the assignments that they choose to complete each week.
