Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children Lit Study + D&D Adventure Club
New on Outschool
In this 15-week course, students will read and study this eerie gothic story while also immersing themselves through a D&D campaign.
Class Experience
Learners will engage in a literature study combined with the social club of a Dungeons & Dragons TTRPG that puts them in the heart of the story. Classes will be presented in a small group of 4-7 learners. Learners will be encouraged to discuss their work and collaborate. Literature assignments are the first priority. If we are behind, we will forego gameplay to get clarification on concepts in the literature. Slides will be used to encourage learner discussion. The first 20-35 minutes of...
In addition to tutoring junior high and high school English and ELA SAT prep for more than 10 years, I love leading book clubs and reading groups with teens & tweens. Reading & writing are passions of mine and I love to see a learner engage with a text because we found the right book for them. I have a Master's degree in Instructional Design that supports creating engaging content that is developmentally appropriate for K-12 learners.
Homework Offered
Assignments include: -Reading up to 3 chapters weekly -Creative Writing Prompts (one or more paragraphs, in each class) -Vocabulary Worksheets (to go with each reading assignment) -Theme work (applying themes from the novel to our personal or characters' lives) All homework except for readings can be submitted once for half-points back at any point while the class is still active and the only homework that has due dates are the readings. For example, if a student got a 70 on the first quiz attempt, but 100 the second time, the student would have a final score of 85. Writing assignments and projects will have various time commitments.1 - 2 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
Learners will be assessed by letter grade: 90%-100% - A 80%-89% - B 70%-79% - C 60%-69% - D Below 60% - F All assignments are done out-of-class and are required. Students who are below a 60% may be excluded from gameplay until their grade is satisfactory.Grades Offered
Letter grades and certificates of completion will be given to all students at the end of the course. If students average an 85%, they will get to skip the final exam and receive a digital copy of their character for online RPGs.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Common Sense Media rates the novel as being appropriate for children ages 13+ due to violence/scariness and language. Throughout a Dungeons & Dragons campaign, adventurers engage in combat. Weapon use (swords, bows & arrows, magic spells) are common. SUPPLIES Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (audiobook, checked out from the library, or purchased paper/ebook) D&D Player's Handbook is recommended but not required as the DM (Mrs. K) can help guide students through gameplay. A set of polyhedral dice, notebook, & writing utensils I will supply students with a 5e Character Sheet & all worksheets to keep track of their adventuring and their homework.
