Sara Johnson, a science fiction and fantasy author, loves the art of storytelling. She discovered the joy of books as a child, which ignited her lifelong passion for writing captivating stories.

Growing up in California, Sara was devoted to learning and artistic pursuits. Her educational journey eventually led her to UCSC, where she honed valuable skills that would later serve her well in administrative and accounting positions.

In 2017, she fully embraced her love for writing, launching a blog for her husbandโ€™s business and crafting her debut novel. In 2023, she received her certificate in copyediting from Emerson College. She continues to improve her writing through education and practice.

During her free time, Sara enjoys baking, reading, and outdoor adventures with her husband and their beloved dog, Holly.

Throughout this course, students will explore the themes, characters, and literary elements of the Lord of the Rings series. While the class primarily focuses on the literary aspects of the book, it's important to note that The Lord of the Rings contains elements of fantasy, including epic battles, mythical creatures, and themes related to good versus evil. Some characters face moral dilemmas, and there are instances of conflict and violence. However, the course is intended to foster critical thinking, appreciation for classic literature, and discussions on various themes, making it an enriching and educational experience for students. We encourage parents to engage with their children in conversations about the material covered in the class and to support their literary exploration.

Below are my general classroom rules and policies. These will also be explained to students when we begin class!

-For everyone's safety, and to ensure an engaging and social experience, students are required to have working microphones and video for the entirety of this class, positioned such that we can both hear and see them. Please be sure to prepare your student for this requirement before class begins!
-Students are asked not to use filters or virtual backgrounds-- though if there is an important reason to use a virtual background, please just let me know ahead of time that your student will be using one (no questions asked!).
-Students will be asked to introduce themselves by sharing their name, pronoun, and a favorite book.
-The Zoom text chat is set to "host only", meaning students can chat with me, but not to one another or the entire classroom.
