Linguistics, the scientific study of human language, is usually only offered at the college level. This 6-hour camp covers the main subfields of structural linguistics: phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics.

Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Session 1: Phonetics and Phonology
By the end of this session, students will be able to:
Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental concepts of phonetics and phonology
Apply transcription conventions to represent speech sounds accurately
Analyze syllable structures and identify common phonological processes in various languages
Engage in discussions and exercises to assess comprehension and practical application of phonetic and phonological concepts

Session 2: Morphology and Syntax
By the end of this session, students will be able to:
Define and distinguish morphemes as the smallest units of meaning in language
Analyze the structure of words and explore lexical categories
Examine the principles of syntax, including word order, phrase structure, and agreement patterns
Utilize the World Atlas of Language Structures to investigate language patterns globally
Participate actively in discussions and exercises to demonstrate comprehension of morphological and syntactic concepts

Session 3: Semantics and Pragmatics
By the end of this session, students will be able to:
Understand the principles of semantics and pragmatics and their roles in language
Organize words into relational networks and apply set theory to analyze meaning in language
Examine word and sentence meaning, considering the contribution of context outside language
Engage in discussions and exercises to assess understanding and application of semantic and pragmatic concepts
Demonstrate an awareness of how meaning works in the brain and the impact of contextual elements on utterance comprehension
