CLASS SYNOPSIS
Middle School and early High School students will read this classic literature novel, The Silmarillion, by JRR Tolkien and analyze the exciting world behind the fantasy book The Lord of the Rings through comprehension questions

OVERVIEW
    - 9 weeks, one 45-minute class per week
    - Students will be asked to read 3 chapters per week in preparation for class meetings
    - Analysis...

Students will:
- Analyze a text
- Strengthen their focus and reading comprehension 
- Critically think and pose questions during and after reading a text that help it become more engrossing, educational, and enriching.  
- Learn how to structure their ideas verbally and communicate when posed with various ideas and perspectives.

Bachelor's degree from Grace University 
Certification to Teach Secondary Students from the University of Nebraska at Omaha
Endorsement in English/Language Arts from the University of Nebraska at Omaha
ACE Educator
Over 10 years of experience in various educational positions

Homework Offered
Students will be asked to read 3 chapters per week.  Depending on reading level, this should take 1 to 2 hours. 1 - 2 hours per week outside of class

Students will be assessed informally through discussion.

- The Silmarillion is a fantasy novel and therefore contains creatures and entities that could be deemed frightening. 
- It contains magic, fantasy violence, and death. Romance is minimally involved with sexual content nearly nonexistent as a kiss is the most explicit scene.
- This is the origin story for the world behind the Lord of the Rings.  General theological discussions may take place (not specific to any religion, however, it should be noted that the author was a Catholic so it may lean towards a secular analysis of Christian imagery and discussion at times)
