FLEX Snail on a Stick: Part I Growing Vocabulary Using Greek Root Words

Students will gain 20 new vocabulary words over two lessons, with the third lesson in the set used for deeper review and word usage. Over 15 lessons, students learn 100 vocabulary words related to the Greek roots acr through anem/ant/anti.

Practice makes progress. Students will improve spelling performance and more easily identify spelling errors within a text. I have taught middle and high school English Language Arts for 17 years. I have taught English literature and composition for advanced students preparing for private high schools with even higher aspirations of attending ivy league schools. I have taught at all grade levels from grades 4 through 12. I have tutored adult college students in these areas as well. I have taught students with minimal English and have taught seventh grade students who read at first grade level. I have achieved great success for myself while completing courses in my doctoral program.

Students should use the following online tools to answer questions on their weekly worksheet. No student account is necessary to use the following tools. Merriam Webster Online Dictionary used for meaning, uses of the word, the word as is seen in current publications, brief history Merriam Webster Online Thesaurus learning to boost related vocabulary by finding words adjacent to the word they are investigating, enjoying synonyms and related words, antonyms and near antonyms Teacher may post a brief funny video to aid student understanding for a vocabulary word. The video will be shown during the teacher lesson posted at the beginning of each week. Teacher utilizes brief clips to boost student engagement and interest and to further deepen student understanding of the vocabulary words explored each week. Teacher will use her professional knowledge to pick videos directly related (and sometimes abstractly) to further interest in what could be a dry topic. Teacher will encourage students to keep a timely chart of tool use and word explored along with date definition or synonym was accessed. Teacher will guide students to create a bibliography of these resources, citing these tools and dates of access properly. This allows students to add minutes and hours needed for this course to count toward a homeschool high school credit. Certificate of Completion: Students must submit all work to teacher in the learner area of the classroom within two weeks of class end date.
