Class Experience
For today’s young creative visual artists, knowledge of digital art and animation processes are a must. In this ongoing class, we will be using Procreate in a fun and collaborative way to build characters, landscapes and create concept art in a fantastical world where our imagination is the only limit. Students in this class will often have discretion to pursue an art subject aligned to their own interests, but I will provide the framework of each lesson highlighting a particular theme, tool...
Learners will gain a solid foundation of the skills needed to create their own digital art. They will learn 2D elements of drawing and the art techniques involved in this. They will also learn how leverage the use the various suite of Procreate tools to bring their work to life. Here are some of the biggest advantages of learning digital art at an early age: 1. Self-expression – Digital art is fast growing, new medium for students to express themselves. They can learn to communicate ideas and feelings through their scenes and characters that are brought to life through digital art tools. 2. Nurturing imaginations – Digital art enables students to think outside the box and apply their imaginations in limitless ways. It helps students get comfortable with their own ideas and use digital tools to explain their stories. 3. Constant engagement – Digital Art can also give students a better understanding of the worlds of their favorite characters, landscapes, stories, games, all further strengthening their engagement. 5. Problem-solving – Digital Art can build great problem-solving skills, both technically and creatively. In the process of learning digital art, they will understand the limitations of the tools and what makes for a feasible scene or action. 6. Technical Skills – Learning digital art requires engaging with technical tools and learning widely-applicable techniques. Students in this course will learn the ins and outs of Procreate, one of the most-used applications in the industry. The techniques they acquire transitions will also be able to translate to any future apps they might try in the field of animation. Knowledge of both the tools and techniques will be helpful in applying digital art schools to their school projects, university presentations, and future careers.
I have a degree in animation and over twenty years of experience teaching and as a professional artist, working on everything from Dungeons & Dragons illustrations to UX design for large-scale corporate applications. I love what I do, so it seldom feels like work to me, and it feels great to be able to help lay the foundation for that kind of relationship with art in others.
Homework Offered
All projects are designed to be introduced and mostly completed in class. I encourage students to continue working on their projects during the week to build to our weekly project and add detail, but it is not essential. We often do sharing time at the start of each class for students to show case their work and get peer feedback as well as my own.Assessments Offered
There is no formal assessment, however, live feedback is offered during class as we work through our project. During sharing time, learners are also invited to share their work with the class to get specific feedback from me and their peers. We make sure that feedback is positive, encouraging and that it keeps everyone engaged. Sharing is completely optional at the learner's choice.Grades Offered
iPad Procreate app Stylus (recommended, but not required)
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Procreate is an app for iPad (unfortunately, not currently available on other devices) that typically costs $12.99. While it may be possible to replicate the art we do in class via other apps, the class will be run under the presumption that students are using Procreate.
