In this one-session class, we will experiment with an acid (vinegar) and a base (baking soda) using balloons. We will apply our understanding of an acid-base reaction to making the batter for soda bread.

Students will learn how to conduct a controlled experiment, what is an acid-base reaction, how to measure the volume of liquids and solids, the circumference of a sphere, and how to make soda bread.

Materials for balloon experiment: water, vinegar, baking soda, 4 bottles, 4 balloons, teaspoon (tsp. 5ml), tablespoon (tbsp. 15ml), measuring tape, two funnels, marker, pencil, printout Materials for bread: Large mixing bowl, medium bowl, large spoon, tablespoon, teaspoon, bread pan, measuring cups (1 cup and 1⁄2 cup), tray, butter knife Ingredients: milk, vinegar, baking soda, flour (whole wheat), salt, and a spoon of something sweet (like honey or maple syrup or sugar)
Parents may need to guide students in using an oven after the class session.
