In introduction to music theory class, students will learn basic musicianship skills, including reading notation and learning about elements of music.

Class Experience

Learners will learn about the basic elements of music and how they are used through presentation, listening, and learning activities.
Sandra Girouard has been a professional musician and music educator for over forty years. She has experience teaching all ages of learners, from preschoolers through adults, in traditional learning settings such as studios, schools, and college as well teaching an online for seven years. She holds Bachelor of Music and Master of Arts in Music Education degrees.

Ms. Sandra is certified through the James Hill Ukulele Initiative and the American Orff-Schulwerk Association. She is a member of the American Recorder Society, the Music Teachers National Association, the American Orff-Schulwerk Association, and the National Association for Music Education.
Homework Offered
Students should complete the review sheets that correspond to each session's topic. This information will be provided in the meeting notes for each session. The material in this class builds from week to week. In order to keep up in terms of understanding. students should complete the corresponding pages in the required book. Students may be able to complete some pages during the class time, as a guided note-taking experience. In addition, the book contains "Review" pages which will be invaluable in internalizing the meaning of each week's lesson.

While the required book is subtitled "A Self-Instruction Music Theory Course," the activities in the book address abstract and sophisticated topics that will be best understood through the explantion and musical examples provided by the instructor. 

Whenever possible, music examples will be linked through YouTube which can be safely embedded into Outschool class pages.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Learners enrolled in this class should have already taken a minimum of one year of private music lessons on any instrument. 
This class will refer to the required book, Practice Theory by Sandy Feldstein, and include musical examples from YouTube selected by the instructor.
