Anthropology, Evolution, & the Origins of Humans
Susan Lanigan
An introduction to evolution and natural selection with a focus on early humans and pre-history!
Class Experience
US Grade 5 - 8
Evolution and its processes can be a difficult subject to explain to young learners, especially those unfamiliar with the larger subject of biological sciences. This class serves as an introduction to evolution by making humans the prime focus! Students will learn about evolution and its mechanisms and how it all applies to the origins of modern humans, as well as other scientific forces that influence how evolution occurs. Each segment of the class will focus on a different topic: 1....
By the end of the course, students will understand evolution and the theories surrounding how it takes place, and be able to explain it with practical examples using Homo sapiens (modern human beings) and their direct and indirect ancestors.
Biological anthropology and evolutionary biology were major components of my Master's degree in Bioarchaeology from Tulane University. In fact, my Human Evolution professor was part of the team that recently discovered one of the "newest" human ancestors in Africa, Homo naledi! I'm passionate about the subject and fascinated by the stunning (and often weird!) life forms that result from natural selection and adaptation.
