Amazing Angles and Super Symmetry: Build a Snowflake!
Ms. Sarah, M.Ed. Science Education
New on Outschool
In this STEAM lesson students will identify and measure acute, obtuse and right angles as well as investigate symmetry while they build their own beautiful snowflake models.
Class Experience
US Grade 4
Let it snow! In this class we will investigate the beauty, symmetry, math and science of snowflakes and snow crystals. We will view images of actual snowflakes, and watch video of snowflakes growing in a lab. As a group we will discuss what we know about snowflakes and their structure. Then after a quick hands-on math lesson on symmetry and the three different types of angles: acute, obtuse and right, we will have some practice with a protractor creating and measuring angles. Finally we will...
Students will learn the characteristics of a snowflake, basic protractor skills, the definition for three different types of angles, and the definition of symmetry.
I have had the pleasure of teaching this fun lesson to students in the science classroom and during family STEAM and science night events over the course of my 20-year teaching career. With over 40 years of New England winters under my belt I have a deep love and appreciation for the math and beauty of the snowflake!
