It can be difficult to find books that are both engaging & appropriate for middle-grade readers. My book club connects texts with history and science to teach students of all levels how to read, write, and think critically.

As a teacher and avid reader (voted "Biggest Bookworm" in high school!), I love analyzing books with students-- and I especially love urging them to dig deep and think about books beyond "it was great." This class seeks to engage students in meaningful discussion about books while also touching on literary devices like symbolism, foreshadowing, tone, historical connections, genre style, and voice. I am a secondary English teacher with certifications in gifted education and special education. I have been professionally teaching for 7 years and have a masters of arts in English education. I have also taught several short story units, and enjoy using discussion-based learning to help students think deeply about the texts that they read.

Reading homework. Students should be reading 50-75 pages per week1 - 2 hours per week outside of class

While each book is widely considered appropriate for children under 13, please research the titles chosen to be certain it is a good choice for your learner. I specifically choose texts that have positive messages and that do not have themes that could be considered disturbing or inappropriate for the age group.
